Does the Abominable Snowman Really Exist?
The Yeti is often known as the Abominable Snowman. Although countless expeditions have been made to remote areas of China, Russia and Nepal to find the Yeti, it is still unknown if they exist.
A Yeti is muscular and covered with dark grayish and reddish-brown hair. Yetis can come in many shapes and sizes.
The Abominable Snowman appears in folklore and legends of the Himalayan people. These stories often warn of dangerous wild animals and how to keep safe within your community.
After Westerners began to travel to the Himalayas in the 19th century, the myth was more popular. Henry Newman, a journalist, interviewed a group of British explorers about their discovery of large footprints on the mountain. His guides had said that they were “metoh-kangmi,” which essentially means “man-bear snowman.” Newman correctly pronounced “snowman”, but mistranslated the word “metoh” as “filthy.” He then seemed to believe that “abominable,” sounded even more terrifying and added this menacing name to the paper.
The majority of evidence for the Yeti is from sightings or reports. There are a few pieces that have been discovered over time.
Sir Edmund Hillary was the first man to climb Mt. Everest in 1960 and found a helmet-shaped hi. Scientists later discovered that the hide was made from a Himalayan animal called a serow, a goat-like animal.
Despite decades of searching, there is still no hard evidence to support the existence of the Abominable Snowman. This means that even if they do not exist, they will always be with us.
